HIV Testing and Counseling

The Denver Metro Health Clinic offers confidential or anonymous (in CTRS only) testing and counseling for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS. As part of the test you will be asked about your risks and about what steps you are currently taking to avoid contracting HIV and other STDs. The test, which uses blood taken from your arm, can be performed in 10 – 20 minutes. After the test is performed, a trained counselor will discuss the results with you. If the test is negative, you will develop a plan together to help you avoid infection in the future. If the test is positive, you will find out about the many treatment and support options that exist today and an appointment will be made to help you receive medical care and avoid transmitting the virus to others.

It takes a while for the virus to show up in somebody’s system. So, if you were exposed to HIV within the last 6 weeks, it may be too soon to obtain conclusive test results. If you are concerned about a recent exposure, you may be asked to return to the clinic for a re-test.
